1. Who We Are

The Ostomy Athlete is an international adventure and advocacy initiative built around people living with an ostomy, inflammatory bowel disease and cancer. Our athletes use demanding mountain, polar and outdoor expeditions as a highly visible platform to educate the public, challenge stigma, inspire people facing serious illness and surgery, and generate charitable support that produces practical improvements in people's lives.

Our story is deliberately larger than sport. The mountains and expeditions attract attention; the charitable purpose determines why that attention matters.

2. Our Charitable Purpose

Our central charitable objective is simple: to improve the quality of life, health, confidence, dignity and opportunity of people affected by ostomies, inflammatory bowel disease and cancer, particularly when illness, surgery or financial hardship has left them without adequate support.

We seek to convert awareness into measurable assistance. That means helping people with practical needs, expanding access to specialized care and education, supporting children and families, strengthening physical and psychological recovery, and creating a global culture in which living with an ostomy is understood rather than hidden.

3. The Communities We Serve

•          People living with an ostomy or stoma, including ileostomy, colostomy and urostomy.

•          People living with inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

•          People affected by colorectal, digestive-system and other cancers that may result in major bowel surgery or an ostomy.

•         Children and teenagers navigating ostomy surgery, inflammatory bowel disease or cancer.

•          Families, caregivers and circles of support.

•          People experiencing financial hardship because of disease, surgery, disability or prolonged interruption of employment.

4. Our Core Charitable Objectives

Direct Financial Assistance

Provide practical financial assistance to people experiencing serious need because of ostomy surgery, inflammatory bowel disease or cancer. Assistance may address essential medical appliance supplies and such as ostomy appliances, medications, rehabilitation, dental needs, transportation, psychological support and other high-need areas that directly affect health and quality of life.

Access to Ostomy and Medical Supplies

Help ensure that financial circumstances do not prevent people from obtaining the ostomy appliances and related supplies necessary to live safely, confidently and with dignity. We also support collaboration with organizations working to close supply gaps in underserved communities.

Specialist Ostomy Nursing and Education

Support scholarships and educational expenses for nurses pursuing specialized stoma/ostomy nursing education and certification. Expanding the number of properly trained clinicians improves patient education, post-operative support, complication management and long-term quality of life.

Psychological and Emotional Healthcare

Help people obtain psychological and emotional healthcare when they cannot otherwise afford it. Major disease, repeated surgery, altered body image and life with an ostomy can affect identity, confidence, relationships and mental wellbeing; recovery must address the whole person.

Physical Rehabilitation and Return to Activity

Support individualized rehabilitation, personal training and education for fitness professionals working with people after ostomy surgery. Our objective is not to make everyone a mountaineer; it is to help people safely reclaim movement, strength, independence and confidence in their own bodies.

Youth Camps and Youth Opportunity

Help children and teenagers affected by ostomy surgery, inflammatory bowel disease and related disease attend specialized camps and peer-support experiences, including assistance with camp fees and transportation to attend camps. Young people benefit enormously from meeting peers who understand their medical and body experiences.

Public Education and Awareness

Educate the general public about what an ostomy is, why it may be required, how it can save a life, and what it means to live with one. We also promote greater understanding of Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, cancer and invisible disability.

Normalize Life With an Ostomy

Challenge the misconception that an ostomy ends an active, ambitious or adventurous life. Through authentic representation we seek to normalize work, relationships, sport, travel, exercise and adventure after ostomy surgery.

Inspiration, Confidence and Belief

Give people facing disease and surgery visible evidence that meaningful life remains possible. Our expeditions are demonstrations of possibility: not instructions that everyone must climb mountains, but reminders that every person can identify and pursue their own version of a summit.

Research, Innovation and Healthcare Collaboration

Where appropriate, collaborate with medical-device manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, universities, hospitals, clinicians and researchers on initiatives that improve knowledge, products, patient education and outcomes in bowel disease and ostomy care.

Advocacy and Reduction of Stigma

Use media, speaking, campaigns and public expeditions to confront shame, misinformation and social isolation surrounding bowel disease, cancer, ostomy surgery and invisible disability. Visibility creates understanding; understanding creates inclusion.

Global Charitable Fundraising

Build a worldwide fundraising platform capable of generating substantial charitable support for the communities we represent. The Ostomy Athlete's stated long-term ambition is to raise US$10 million in charitable donations and direct those resources toward meaningful, practical impact.

5. Why Adventure Is Part of the Charitable Model

The Ostomy Athlete uses extraordinary outdoor objectives because adventure gives the charitable message reach. Mountains, endurance journeys and polar environments create powerful visual stories that can engage people who might never otherwise encounter a conversation about an ostomy, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, cancer or invisible disability.

The expedition is therefore a communications platform. Its purpose is to open doors to education, fundraising, partnerships and human stories. Athletic achievement is important, but the larger measure of success is the number of people who become informed, supported, encouraged or directly assisted.

6. From Hospital Bed to Personal Summit

A central message of The Ostomy Athlete is that recovery is individual. Our athletes may demonstrate possibility on mountains and in remote environments, but we do not define recovery by athletic achievement. For one person, a summit may be returning to work. For another, it may be walking around the block, travelling again, swimming, becoming comfortable with body image, attending school, rebuilding relationships or simply leaving the house without fear.

Everyone has their own Everest.

9. Partnership Philosophy

We welcome collaboration with charities, patient organizations, hospitals, clinicians, universities, medical-device and pharmaceutical companies, outdoor and travel brands, corporations, foundations, patrons, media organizations and individuals who share our desire to improve lives.

Partnerships should create genuine value for the communities we represent. We seek relationships that can expand assistance, education, research, access, opportunity or awareness - not partnerships that merely place a logo beside an expedition.

10. Charitable Funds and Commercial Expedition Costs

Clarity and transparency are essential. Charitable donations intended for beneficiary programs should be distinguished from commercial payments, sponsorships or in-kind support used to organize and deliver expeditions. Where The Ostomy Athlete Mountain Adventures Company provides expedition services, payments to that company should be described accurately as expedition or program costs and not as charitable donations.

This distinction allows donors, charities, corporate partners, participants and the public to understand exactly what their support funds and protects the credibility of the charitable mission.

We want people facing major bowel disease and surgery to see examples of possibility, while also having access to the practical healthcare, financial, psychological and community support required to turn possibility into reality.

Our ambition is global: use adventure to attract attention, education to change understanding, fundraising to create resources, and direct assistance to improve individual lives.

The ostomy is not the end of the story. For many people it is the medical intervention that makes the next chapter possible. The Ostomy Athlete exists to help make that next chapter healthier, more confident, better supported and filled with greater possibility.
